Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of The Holy Way in Indonesia. Jakarta, Indonesia Herry's report from their visit One day in the Fall of 2007, we received an invitation from an elder of The Holy Way Foundation in Jakarta, Indonesia. “Big plans” were underway to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Founding of The Holy Way by our Dad, the Rev. Edwin B. Stube. The date was set for March 7 - 14, 2008 The idea of going to Indonesia for this great event and to see family and friends was totally out of reach for us. “No way,” we thought. But we decided to pray, as did so many others, for months. We are convinced now that God’s plan was for us to attend, since He moved in the hearts of others to graciously make the trip possible. This was a miracle! More and more we are learning the meaning of Isaiah 55: 8-9. “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways, says the Lord.” He has shown us clearly, that His ways and plans are so much higher than ours and that He knows our need even before we ask. We are so grateful that Jehovah-Jireh, is our Provider!! Upon arriving at Jakarta we spent one night with Dolly's family. The next day we went right away to Taman Mini where the 40th Anniversary Holy Convocation was being held. Taman Mini is the Disneyland of Indonesia. It is huge! Sightseeing is very interesting, because among many displays, you can view every type of house representing the different Indonesian tribes, and there are many. The setting of Taman Mini is very beautiful, and provided a small lake near our area for all to enjoy. Being such a huge compound, it is also ideal for handling large groups of people. When we first reached the entrance of Taman Mini it was very festive to see colorful banners displayed everywhere and we could tell that The Holy Way Foundation wanted all people to know that this was to be a joyful event! We also understood that a “statement was being made” concerning the struggles caused when a small group of The Holy Way separated and became a church several years back. The banners depicted clearly that The Holy Way Foundation holds to the original vision established by Fr. Stube 40 years ago! Soon we began to see hundreds of people pouring in. There were old and young from cities, villages and islands all over Indonesia coming to the convocation grounds. It was estimated that between 500 and 600 souls attended, including a few people from other nations. The meetings and sessions started at 7:00 am and lasted sometimes until 9:00 pm with a few breaks in-between. Sometimes, very early in the morning, we could hear our next door neighbors praying and singing in the spirit. As the full assembly gathered for this unique event, during the first days, there was much joy, with exuberant music, singing praise and thanks to God for this great celebration. There were also people marching about the hall with floating banners flying high and there were speakers. By the third day, (as it has often happened in the States,) the gifts of the Spirit started to flow. People began to prophesy, speak words of wisdom and minister to one another in the Spirit, with laying on of hands. There were teachings. Some souls were moved to repentance, and confessed disobedience to God but this seemed to be only “the tip of the iceberg.” One day I, Herry, felt the need to give an exhortation for encouragement. I began by sharing how important it is for believer’s to “walk in the Spirit,” at all times and to exercise the gifts that God gives freely to His people by the Holy Spirit! While still speaking, there seemed to be a spirit of darkness coming over the gathering. It was repulsive! Suddenly, a young man possessed by a spirit became wild and started to run around the entire meeting room and he was almost naked. A few people saw that he was followed by some little dark kids who started jumping up high on chairs, and even came up to the podium exhibiting strange behavior. About 8 people tried to stop the young man, to no avail. He was strong and kept running. At this point, I knew the enemy was trying to get us to lose our focus on Jesus. So at that moment, I asked the entire congregation to pray for his deliverance in Jesus’ Name! In a very short time, the young man calmed down and was taken out of the hall to receive further ministry. We have not had an experience like that for a long time but this is what we have always noticed. Whenever we begin to speak about the work and power of The Holy Spirit, demons don't like it. In fact, they hate it! Yet, more than ever, this is the message the church needs to hear today. And not just to hear but to receive and exercise. If we want to see people set free and congregations worshiping in spirit and in truth we need to invite the Holy Spirit into our midst. The Church must walk in the Spirit today; otherwise it will not go anywhere. Let’s fervently pray for the anointing of God’s Holy Spirit for the church around the globe, including missions, ministries and fellowships like ours, especially in the USA, so that all will be open to receive a powerful anointing and become mighty witnesses of Jesus Christ! In general, the Convocation was good, the fellowship wonderful! The closing included a lot of singing and speeches, and of course we must not forget to mention a lot of delicious food! May the Lord bless those who provided, prepared, served and cleaned up! A real gift of love! During this time of such a wonderful visit, the thing that was most memorable and refreshing for us, were the reports from different islands and remote places where the work of The Holy Way Foundation is flourishing. In one special session, we heard and talked directly with most of the elders involved. What we heard from them is, that the Lord is moving by His Spirit to bring many, many people to His kingdom. We heard over and over from these elders that signs and wonders are following them because they are a faithful group of disciples, carrying on the vision that Fr. Stube gave in the beginning when he trained young people 40 years ago. This vision will never die, because they always carry it wherever they go, preaching the Gospel, healing the sick, making disciples and sending them out. They don't establish new churches or new names. What they do, is: work with local churches, reach out to the community, and make small cell groups. These are very powerful methods to upbuild the church! One young man that we met 3 years ago when we visited in Manado, North Sulawesi, went to the Island Nusa Tenggara Timur. He and his team have established at least 20 cell groups; each group has 20-30 people. He said in the year of 2010, God willing, that in this island there will be 40-50 cell groups of Holy Way Foundation. Many times they have open air meetings because there is not a place big enough for people to meet. They have started a training center, for the young people who have a passion for Jesus. Another place in West Jawa, Bandung, The Holy Way Foundation is growing fast, especially among college and university students. God has prepared one of the young men that received training from Manado Bible Training Center to be sent out to Bandung, He began with a few Christians getting together for prayer and worship. Now, after a year the fellowship is getting large and they are forming cell groups in most sections of the city. I heard that they will host the next Convocation. In East Java another group of young people who were former members of The Holy Way Church, have left the church because of rules and regulations which are opposed to the Holy Way Foundation. These young people, about six, began ministry among young people in East Java. The area is heavily populated by Moslems, but the strong dedication of their faith in Jesus and the time that they spend in prayer and intercession is bearing fruit. God has begun to open doors for the Gospel to be preached in that area. A few months ago they held a youth meeting and the number of young people that came surprised them. There were 500 hundred in attendance! From that meeting, we heard that someone donated his new building (which happens to hold around 500 people) to use for a training center. Now, the churches in that county have begun to establish relationship with The Holy Way Foundation. Awesome news! Finally, we can see, God is bringing a new generation to carry on the old vision, yet ever-new, for The Holy Way. This reflects their faith and commitment. Also, we love that the elders named the original branch: The Holy Way Foundation Indonesia, because it’s foundation was rooted and established 40 years ago and still exists until this day. We rejoice too, seeing and hearing everything that God has been doing in the family of The Holy Way Foundation. Even through struggles and persecution they stand firm. Because of their faithfulness and hard work, we see the fruit of their ministry. Our God is alive! He is God of the living! May He, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, be, glorified for ever and ever! Amen. |
